You still feel brand new. So when is the right time to think about culture?

Most founders wait too long to establish their people and culture strategy.
If they follow the typical track, first they build the product. Then they find customers. Much later, they think about culture.
It’s not because founders are deliberately avoidant. It’s what happens when you’re moving fast and trying to survive those shaky early years in business.
The problem is that this is often when the most risk exists.
Whether you’re thinking about it or not (and even if it’s the last item on a very long to-do list), your culture is already forming. It shows up in how decisions get made, how teams are recognised and rewarded, and how long poor performance is left to fester.
That’s why involving a specialist partner early can be so valuable. It helps founders get deliberate about the kind of company they’re building, and the company they’re keeping.
For early-stage businesses, setting culture can feel a little uncomfortable. Almost like trying on a tuxedo and wearing it to the pub. You don’t want to act bigger than you are, and you certainly don’t want to lock yourself into ways of working that feel off-brand.
But culture isn't about acting big. It’s about being clear.
At Emerging Engines, we help founders build practical, accountable ways of working that can flex and evolve as the business grows.
You probably don’t need a full HR function yet. But you do need to think about how you want your business to function.
What does good look like?
What happens when people don’t deliver?
What are the values you’d die on a hill for?
And what, to you, is utterly intolerable?
Getting clear on these questions early makes it far less likely you’ll find yourself years down the track dealing with politics, poor behaviour and issues nobody wants to tackle.
So, is your business ready for P&C?
